1. Introduction to the subject

Instrument science and technology is an important part of information science and technology. It is a theory and technology that studies information acquisition, storage, processing, and control of related elements. It is an engineering discipline formed by the interpenetration of multiple disciplines such as electronics, optics, precision machinery, computer, information and control technology. It mainly discusses and studies the measurement theory and measurement method, the working principle, design method and application technology of various types of measuring instruments and measurement and control systems, which have a significant role in promoting people's production, life, development of high and new technology and national economic construction.

The instrument science and technology discipline of Harbin Engineering University originated from the hydrographic survey and navigation equipment specialty established in 1953 during the "Harbin Army Engineering" period. As a domestic instrument science and technology discipline facing the field of ship and ocean engineering, the discipline has distinctive characteristics of "ship and sea", shouldering the mission of supporting and leading personnel training, scientific research and social services in the field of ship precision inertial instruments and ocean surveying and mapping instruments. The school direction is highly consistent with the national strategy and social and economic development, and has a long-term school history. It is an important supporting force for our university's shipbuilding industry, naval equipment and Marine development characteristics.

In the 21st century, the instrument discipline has met the major needs of national strategy and Marine equipment construction, and through the cross-integration of quantum, optics, electricity, instruments and other disciplines, it has successfully developed a number of precision measuring instruments, such as the first set of optical navigation equipment for naval ships and the first wave monitoring equipment based on Marine radar. It serves major national tasks such as aircraft carriers, Marine environmental monitoring, and seventh generation ultra-deep water drilling platforms.

The discipline attaches great importance to the internationalization of its teaching staff, and has long insisted on sending key teachers to study abroad in a planned way, encouraging academic exchanges during postgraduate study, and establishing joint training mechanisms with universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, Canada and other countries through grants from the China Scholarship Council, schools and colleges.

Since its inception, the discipline of Instrument science and Technology has always focused on the frontier of discipline development, carried out education, teaching and scientific research in the directions of inertial instrumentation and inertial measurement, test and measurement technology and instruments, and Marine information and measurement instruments, and gradually developed into a well-known talent training and scientific research base with distinctive characteristics in the field of shipbuilding and ocean engineering.
